The Winans helped define gospel for a generation of young people in the ’80s and ’90s by bringing it into the mainstream, adding R&B and urban contemporary sounds that made their music and message accessible to non-gospel audiences.   Marvin, Carvin, Michael, and Ronald were four of ten siblings (platinum-selling brother and sister duo BeBe and CeCe among them) raised in Detroit by strictly Pentecostal parents (also gospel singers). The Winans’ professional career took off in the 1980s after a friend introduced them to singer-songwriter-producer Andre Crouch, who helped them land a deal with Light Records. Their 1981 debut album Introducing The Winans was the first of their hits for Light. By decade’s end, when they signed with Quincy Jones’ Qwest label, the quartet had become chart-toppers and one of gospel’s most popular groups.  In the’90s The Winans worked with such top urban producers as Teddy Riley and R. Kelly, and their sound became even more progressive. Through it all, The Winans have remained faith-focused and ministry-driven, and as winners of five Grammys® and multiple Dove and Stellar Awards, they have earned the respect of both the gospel and mainstream music communities.  Rhino’s The Very Best Of The Winans is the only best-of to feature all the hits from the first family of contemporary gospel.
