Storm Hymnal: Gems From The Vault Of Grant Lee Buffalo
$19.98 CD
"Ambitious and dramatic, Grant Lee Buffalo's music veers from visionary roots rock to U2-style emotional grandeur at a time when most bands seem reluctant to risk anything nearly so bold." -- Rolling Stone's Anthony DeCurtis
The first-ever retrospective from one of the most critically acclaimed bands of the '90s. A beautiful two-disc set, Storm Hymnal gathers 16 of their best-known songs, along with an entire discs' worth of rarities and unreleased tracks. Includes the modern rock hits "Truly Truly" and "Mockingbirds," as well as the out-of-print B-sides "Orpheus" and "Goodnight John Dee."
Championed by Michael Stipe, Bob Mould, Lloyd Cole, and virtually every critic that ever heard them, Grant Lee Buffalo epitomized artistic credibility in the 1990s. Inspired by the classic work of John Lennon, David Bowie, and Neil Young, songwriter Grant Lee Phillips quickly proved their equal. His elegant, eloquent songs bring profound lyrical imagery and hypnotic melodies to subjects both personal and historical. Swinging from backwoods simplicity to feather-touch tenderness to six-string abandon, his trio kicked a hole in the concept of "roots rock."
In 1991 guitarist-vocalist Phillips, bassist Paul Kimble, and drummer Joey Peters formed Grant Lee Buffalo from the ashes of L.A.'s Shiva Burlesque. GLB's debut album, Fuzzy (1993), was heralded as one of year's best. Similarly organic, Mighty Joe Moon (1994) and Copperopolis (1996) followed under the production hand of Kimble. Creative differences led to Kimble's exit, and GLB's stylish swan song, Jubilee (1998), was recorded with additional musicians and produced by Paul Fox (XTC, 10,000 Maniacs). Phillips has since released three solo albums: Ladies' Love Oracle (2000), Mobilize (2001), and Virginia Creeper (2004).
