Album of the Day

Todd Rundgren has always been known as an artist who can do it all, and he takes the do-it-yourself approach to its limit on A CAPELLA: everything heard on the album is Todd’s voice. Which doesn’t necessarily mean it sounds like a voice; Rundgren’s mastery of overdubbing and use of an E-mu Emulator offer endless sonic possibilities. As experimental as this set may seem, there are solid pop songs at its core, and “Pretending to Care,” “Honest Work,” and “Blue Orpheus” have all been covered by other artists. Recorded for longtime label Bearsville, the collection had originally been shelved until a deal with Warner Bros. prompted a 1985 release, and a remastered version of A CAPELLA returns next month on orange vinyl for Record Store Day.
