Todd Rundgren
Todd Rundgren’s groundbreaking debut for Warner Records, A CAPELLA, marks a pivotal moment in the performer’s career before his solo hiatus. Rundgren employed overdubbing techniques and an E-mu Emulator (an early sampler), electronically manipulating the sound of his voice to mimic conventional rock instruments, handclaps and other sounds. As experimental as this set may seem, there are solid pop songs at its core, and “Pretending to Care,” “Honest Work,” and “Blue Orpheus” have all been covered by other artists. Entirely vocal-driven, A CAPELLA stands as one of Todd’s most unique works, and for this Record Store Day, it returns to vinyl for the first time since its 1985 release, mastered from the original analog stereo tapes.
