Album of the Day
Baron von Tollbooth & The Chrome Nun
As Jefferson Airplane began winding down, its members took advantage of breaks in the schedule for offshoot projects like BARON VON TOLLBOOTH & THE CHROME NUN. David Crosby gave Paul Kantner and Grace Slick those nicknames; the pair are joined by bandmate David Freiberg on the 1973 set. The rest of the Airplane is also here in support – along with such guests as Crosby, Jerry Garcia and The Pointer Sisters. Cut at San Francisco’s Wally Heider Studios, the album features philosophically tinged progressive rock highlighted by such tracks as “Your Mind Has Left Your Body,” the title song and “Harp Tree Lament” (co-written by Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter). With cover art by the late, great illustrator Drew Struzan, BARON VON TOLLBOOTH & THE CHROME NUN shows Slick and company still flying high.
