Steve Howe

While Steve Howe’s musical beginnings stretch back a decade earlier (to U.K. ’60s groups like The Syndicats and Tomorrow), the Yes guitarist’s first solo album was 1975’s BEGINNINGS. The legendary prog rock band had taken a brief hiatus after RELAYER to allow its members the chance to cut records on their own, and Howe drew upon demos he’d been saving up for years. It’s clear from the lyrics and passionate playing that these nine songs are near and dear to his heart, and while the Atlantic collection features plenty of virtuoso axework, the performer impresses on numerous other instruments as well. With appearances by bandmates Bill Bruford, Alan White and Patrick Moraz - and Roger Dean’s cover art offering another Yes touchpoint - BEGINNINGS showcases Steve Howe’s talents beautifully.
