King's X
After a year off, Springfield, Missouri progressive metal trio King’s X returned with a vengeance to release DOGMAN in 1994. The Atlantic collection saw heavy hitter Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots) step in as producer, resulting in a grunge-informed sound that better reflected the power of the band’s live shows (as frontman Doug Pinnick put it, “for me personally, the DOGMAN record is what King's X really sounds like”). The spiritual questioning of previous albums is further clouded with doubt. Still, Beatlesque melodies and funky basslines ensure songs like “Complain,” “Black the Sky,” and the title track remain very accessible. Among the group’s highest-charting releases, DOGMAN remains a fan favorite for good reason.
