More than twenty years into his career, Gordon Lightfoot showed he was still eager to try new things with EAST OF MIDNIGHT. While his voice and guitar remain as impressive as ever, the 1986 Warner Bros. set (his first in three years) has a much stronger emphasis on keyboards than most of Lightfoot’s previous work, with James Newton Howard and David Foster among the featured players. The latter luminary co-wrote and co-produced the set’s “Anything for Love,” a minor AC hit; such tracks as “Morning Glory” and closing number “I'll Tag Along” showed that Gord could still pen first-class songs on his own. Certified Gold in the performer’s native Canada, EAST OF MIDNIGHT celebrates its 40th anniversary this month.
