Kicking off Women’s History Month is FOR THE ROSES, Joni Mitchell’s first album for David Geffen's Asylum Records. Its dozen originals are perceptive, poetic and frequently personal; there's likely a touch of Joni's romantic travails in “Woman of Heart and Mind,” and her attitude toward the music industry surfaces in the title track and “You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio,” the singer-songwriter's first Top 40 hit. Mitchell’s original cover design - a horse with roses emerging from its rear end – reflected that jaundiced view of the business but was vetoed by her label; next month’s Record Store Day release restores the artwork for the first time. Selected by the Library of Congress for its National Recording Registry, FOR THE ROSES is Joni Mitchell at the top of her game.
