Stiff Little Fingers
After performing together in a cover band named after a Deep Purple song, members of Stiff Little Fingers discovered punk and renamed themselves after a Vibrators song. Their focus also shifted to original material, and as their home was Belfast during the time of Northern Ireland’s Troubles, there was plenty around to inspire them, as can be heard on their 1979 debut INFLAMMABLE MATERIAL. Highlighted by such raging singles as “Suspect Device” and “Alternative Ulster,” the collection has its share of topical tracks (journalist Gordon Ogilvie contributed lyrics), but most were what frontman Jake Burns described as “just disaffected teenagers kicking against the world.” The first independent album to reach the U.K. Top Twenty, INFLAMMABLE MATERIAL has lost none of its explosive power.
