Jill Sobule
Denver-born singer-songwriter Jill Sobule released her MCA debut in 1990, but her career stalled when the label shelved two prospective follow-ups; things picked up five years later after a switch to the Atlantic-distributed Lava imprint for an eponymous second set. Recorded in Nashville, JILL SOBULE was a commercial breakthrough thanks to hit single “I Kissed a Girl” (with its clever MTV video costarring Fabio) and “Supermodel,” which was added to the album soon after it appeared on the Clueless soundtrack. Quirky humor abounds on this collection, but these 13 songs also have their thoughtful and empathetic sides. With an eclectic cast of supporting musicians (including The Bongos’ Richard Barone, MC5’s Wayne Kramer and pedal steel guitarist Buddy Emmons), JILL SOBULE is a folk-pop gem.
