Album of the Day

Among the longest-running female groups of all time, The Three Degrees formed in Philadelphia in 1963 and, though they waxed several singles that decade, it wasn’t until 1970 that they made an album. MAYBE was worth the wait, with outstanding solo and harmony vocals from the classic lineup of Sheila Ferguson, Valerie Holiday and Fayette Pinkney. The Roulette collection is anchored by the title track (a Top 10 R&B hit) but also impresses with terrific covers of “MacArthur Park,” “Stardust” and “Collage.” Though the trio would see greater success with slicker recordings for Philadelphia International a few years later, the fabulously funky MAYBE is certain to please any soul fan.
