Gerry Rafferty

Born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland on this day in 1947, Gerry Rafferty grew up listening to traditional folk and ’60s rock, both of which informed his later work as a singer-songwriter. Never a fan of the limelight, the performer went from worldwide hit “Baker Street” to the unassuming but lovely NIGHT OWL. Co-produced by Hugh Murphy and featuring a cover as lavishly illustrated as its predecessor, the 1979 collection brims with poignant songs including “Get It Right Next Time,” “Days Gone Down” and the title track. Rafferty’s evocative voice and guitar work go a long way toward establishing an intimate mood here, though he’s also assisted by such talented guests as Richard and Linda Thompson. Gold-certified on both sides of the Atlantic, NIGHT OWL still flies high.
