The Pogues
Titled after a Winston Churchill quote about naval tradition (that “seemed to sum up life in our band,” according to drummer Andrew Ranken), RUM, SODOMY & THE LASH was the second studio album by The Pogues. Brought in to produce the group’s singles, Elvis Costello stayed for the entire album, capturing the London-based, Irish folk-punk band in all their dilapidated glory. Frontman Shane MacGowan may have had rock’s worst teeth, but he also had one of its sharpest pens, as can be heard on such originals as “A Pair Of Brown Eyes” and “The Old Main Drag.” Filled with fiery performances, RUM, SODOMY & THE LASH is available today in a double-disc 40th Anniversary Edition including B-sides, live and BBC cuts and the legendary Poguetry In Motion EP.
