As the follow-up to the hugely successful RED OCTOPUS, Jefferson Starship’s SPITFIRE was among the most anticipated albums of 1976, shipping Gold on release for the first time in the group’s history (it would eventually be certified Platinum). The collection resembles its predecessor in musical approach; while all members contributed to the material, Grace Slick, Paul Kantner and Marty Balin took the lead, coming up with such outstanding songs as “Switchblade,” “St. Charles,” and hit single “With Your Love.” With strong instrumental work from guitarist Craig Chaquico and keyboardist David Freiberg, SPITFIRE “combines a rare stylistic breadth with awesomely controlled power” (as Rolling Stone’s original review put it,) and it remains a highlight of the Jefferson Starship catalog.
