Album of the Day
SUPERNATURAL THING

As lead singer for The Drifters during their glory days and a successful solo artist, Ben E. King had already clinched a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by 1975. But at that point, the hits had slowed – which is why SUPERNATURAL was such a pleasant surprise. Powered by the Top 10 single “Supernatural Thing Part 1,” the collection was an effortless transition to a mid-’70s soul sound for King (who sings in a higher register for much of this set). Featuring a couple of additional songs by the title track’s Grant/Guthrie writing team including “Do It In the Name of Love,” the Atlantic album shows the star could be funky and danceable as well as a brilliant balladeer. With Bowie guitarist Carlos Alomar among the guest musicians, SUPERNATURAL is a comeback that still works magic.
