Formed in Los Angeles by singer-bassist Josh Haden, Spain made an impressive debut with 1995’s THE BLUE MOODS OF SPAIN. The frontman’s famous father, Charlie Haden, and the album’s evocative cover art suggest cool jazz, but, like the Cowboy Junkies and country music, it’s an influence that’s more felt than heard. This is a record for late-night reveries; featuring nine originals highlighted by “I Lied,” “Dreaming of Love” and “Spiritual” (which has been covered by artists including Johnny Cash), the collection is introspective and haunting. THE BLUE MOODS OF SPAIN proved popular with critics upon release – England’s Melody Maker called it “the most gorgeous music you'll hear all year” – and its brooding atmosphere will still envelope listeners.
