Tina Turner had been turning the country on for years as part of a red-hot touring/recording revue when she released her first solo album in 1974. Cut at then-husband Ike Turner’s Inglewood studio with Nashville producer Tom Thacker behind the boards, TINA TURNS THE COUNTRY ON! pairs the performer’s strong voice with songs by the likes of Dolly Parton, Hank Snow, Kris Kristofferson and Bob Dylan. It’s a surprisingly effective combination, aided by studio aces including guitarist James Burton, saxophonist Tom Scott and background singers Merry Clayton & Clydie King. Turner earned a Best R&B Vocal Performance Grammy nomination for TINA TURNS THE COUNTRY ON!, a compelling debut from the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer.
