Album of the Day
White Pepper
Friends since junior high typing class, Gene Ween and Dean Ween never met a genre they didn’t like and that eclecticism reaches a peak on WHITE PEPPER. Ween’s final studio album for Elektra Records throws a curve with every track and whether nodding to Brit-pop (“Even If You Don't”), hardcore (“Stroker Ace”) or country (“Falling Out”), the band’s songwriting and instrumental chops belie their reputation as jokesters. The 2000 collection is nonetheless one of the group’s most accessible and was hailed by alternative outlets including Magnet, Stereogum and Creative Loafing. This Record Store Day, Rhino turns the clock back on Ween with the previously unreleased EUROPE 90, a 3-LP set including long-lost studio sessions cut in Eindhoven on Christmas Day 1990 and an extremely brown concert from Basel, Switzerland cited by Dean as an all-time favorite.
