The Cure

Having finally broken through to the mainstream with their DISINTEGRATION album, The Cure capitalized on that momentum with follow-up WISH. Released on this day in 1992, the Elektra collection would prove to be the British band’s biggest chart success, becoming their first U.K. No.1 album (the set would reach No.2 on the American chart, eventually going Platinum). While the set displays a very accessible sound on such songs as “High,” “A Letter to Elise” and the shimmering “Friday I’m In Love,” Robert Smith's lyrics remain as dark and intense as ever. Credit the appealing performances to one of the best Cure lineups on record (on-again-off-again member Porl Thompson provides plenty of guitar here). By turns bright and bleak, this Grammy nominee for Best Alternative Music Album is everything a Cure fan could WISH for.
