While the first three Grateful Dead studio albums earned many fans, the Bay Area band didn’t really catch the world’s attention until the June 1970 release of WORKINGMAN'S DEAD. With eight perfect songs (“Casey Jones” and “High Time” among them), the set solidified the Jerry Garcia-Robert Hunter songwriting tandem as one of the best songwriting collaborations in music history. The album reached the Top Thirty and included the single “Uncle John’s Band,” which climbed to #69 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The Platinum-certified collection marks the point where the sextet's strength in the recording studio finally matched their legendary live performances, and we’ll give it a spin to wish drummer Bill Kreutzmann a happy birthday.
