Matchbox Twenty seemed to come out of nowhere in the mid-1990s to become one of America's most successful rock bands. The “nowhere” in this instance was Orlando, Florida, where singer/songwriter Rob Thomas, guitarists Kyle Cook & Adam Gaynor, bassist Brian Yale and drummer Paul Doucette had been bouncing around local groups. The quintet set to work with Collective Soul producer Matt Serletic, releasing their debut album in 1996. Yourself Or Someone Like You was the right record at the right time; the arrangements had the sound of alternative, but such songs as “Push,” “3 A.M.,” “Real World” and “Back 2 Good” had mainstream-friendly hooks, and the disc eventually passed 10 million in sales.
