Rhino Factoids: Rod Stewart - Lifetime Achievement Award Winner

15 years ago today, Rod Stewart received the Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement Award, although the Highgate-born rocker seemed decidedly more pleased with other accomplishments when he turned up at the ceremony.

Here’s how his appearance at the event was described in an Associated Press story the day after the to-do:

“Rocker Rod Stewart was celebrating Manchester United's Euro triumph after winning a wad of money with a flutter on the Bayern Munich clash. The 54-year-old star turned up to the award ceremony today waving a handful of £50 notes, accompanied by his new romance Kim Conrad. ‘I won the lot on a game last night,’ said the star, who has picked up a reputation over the years for being careful with his cash. It is the first time the star has been seen publicly in the UK with Kim, a former Playboy centerfold and estranged wife of Hugh Hefner. Rod said, ‘I'm feeling great, but I'll feel better if Celtic win the Cup this weekend.’ Celtic play Rangers in the Scottish FA Cup Final on Saturday.”

As it turns out, Rod’s mood only got worse: the Rangers won.

You also may know that he and Conrad didn’t end up living happily ever after, but things turned out pretty well for him on that front: he started dating Penny Lancaster later that year, ultimately marrying her in 2007, and they actually are still together.

To pay tribute to the anniversary of Rod’s lifetime achievement award, we’ve put together a playlist of some of our favorite tracks from his back catalog on Warner Brothers, including a whole lot of hits as well as a few cover song choices which may surprise you.
