Snap, Crackle & How’s Your Dad? A Father’s Day Playlist (Article)
Friday, June 13, 2014
When we offered up our Mother’s Day mix last month, we described the holiday as “an annual opportunity for greeting card manufacturers and affiliated businesses to convince you that you should love your mother a little bit more on this particular Sunday than you do every other day of the year, and if you don’t…well, obviously, you’re a terrible, terrible child.” But Father’s Day? Now that’s a real holiday! Nah, we’re just kidding. We just wanted to see the moms freak out…and it was totally worth it. Now that we’ve given them an aneurysm, though, let’s get to that Father’s Day mix, shall we? We

Here Comes the Memorial Day Weekend (Article)
Thursday, May 22, 2014
Memorial Day weekend is fast approaching, which naturally means that we’ve got a playlist ready for your listening pleasure, but our original intention – to wrangle a collection of songs that were barbeque-themed, since so many people are prone to having cookouts this time of year – kind of fell apart after Martini Ranch’s “Hot Dog” and ZZ Top’s “Burger Man.” As such, we decided to focus on weekend songs instead, although we did throw in a track from Jane’s Addiction as a nod to how long the weekend’s gonna last, just in case you needed reminding. Stay safe, have fun, and enjoy the music!

MAY We Offer You a Playlist for Cinco de Mayo? (Article)
Monday, May 5, 2014
Today is May 5, a day which, for some people, also doubles as the only phrase they know in Spanish besides “una cerveza, por favor.” Yes, that’s right, we’re talking about Cinco de Mayo, and you know us: we can’t resist putting together a soundtrack for whatever level of celebration you plan to indulge in this evening. Unfortunately, there aren’t nearly as many songs featuring the number “five” in their title as you might think, but there are more than a few that feature the word “may.” Granted, not all of them are actually using it in terms of the month, but between the quality of the music

Rhino Playlist: Every Day of the Week (Article)
Wednesday, April 23, 2014
It’s the middle of the week, and we here at Rhino know that it can sometimes be a bit rough to get over the Wednesday hump and see the light of at the end of the tunnel. In order to help make the way to the weekend a little bit less painful, we’ve put together a playlist featuring songs that span the entire week, starting with New Order’s “Blue Monday” and lasting all the way through to the Waterboys’ “A Life of Sundays,” with 65 songs sitting snugly between them. It might not make you hate your job any less, but here’s hoping it’ll at least give you something to hum while you’re hating.

The Folk Box: ‘the kind of album that changes lives’ (Article)
Wednesday, April 23, 2014
by Ted Olson The Folk Box is the kind of album that changes lives—I know this because it changed mine, assuredly for the better. And over the years I have heard that The Folk Box played an important formative role in the lives of many other people. About the time I was learning to stay upright on a bicycle (1967), I discovered my parents’ record collection, which contained a host of titles—classical and jazz, mostly—that held little appeal to a six-year-old. But one album captured my interest—a thick box set with an appealingly rustic, unpretentious front cover. Somehow that cover spoke to me

This Is Planet Earth... Day (Article)
Tuesday, April 22, 2014
It’s April 22nd, and everybody knows today is Earth Day…well, except maybe for Dramarama fans, but we’ll cut them some slack because it’s a hell of a lot harder to find a rhyme for “second” than it is for “first.” There’s also the fact that “What Are We Doing Here?” is a really great, Beatle-esque song that’s really well-intentioned and shouldn’t be written off just because they were a day off. Besides, all that matters is this: if you’ve got even a passing interest in environmental protection, then today’s the day to demonstrate your commitment to the cause. (You can find a list of Earth Day

A Truly Fab Moment in Music History (Article)
Friday, April 4, 2014
50 years ago today, something happened on the Billboard Hot 100 that had never happened before and hasn’t happened again since: every one of the top five entries was held by the same artist... and given the unabashed use of the adjective “fab” in the headline, you probably won’t be terribly surprised to learn that it was the Beatles who achieved this still-unparalleled feat. If you’re wondering, the songs in question were – moving from the top spot down – “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Twist and Shout,” “She Loves You,” “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” and “Please Please Me.” To celebrate this occasion, we
