Happy Birthday: Jack White (Article)
Monday, July 9, 2018
Today we celebrate the birthday of John Anthony Gillis, a man who subsequently married a young lady named Megan White, decided to reverse marital tradition and take his wife’s last name, and subsequently became a huge rock star. Oh, right, and he also started going by “Jack.” In honor of Jack White’s b-day, we’ve got a playlist filled with the White Stripes material from our catalog, but we’ve also put together a six-pack of videos which will introduce you to some songs that White has produced over the years. It should give you an idea of his gifts in the studio as well as how diverse his

Back to the ‘80s: Rod Stewart, Spandau Ballet, and Yes (Article)
Tuesday, July 10, 2018
While we continue to wait for scientists to crack the nut that is time travel, there’s still a way that we can be transported through the mists of time to the 1980s, and that’s through the power of music. As you may recall reading last week, Rhino is sending consumers back to the ’80s with their appropriately-titled new vinyl reissue campaign, “Back to the ‘80s,” and it continues this week with three more limited-edition reissues on 140-gram vinyl. Here are the three titles in question, each listed with the various details about their reissue, including what color the vinyl will be and how

Single Stories: David Bowie, “Space Oddity” (Article)
Wednesday, July 11, 2018
49 years ago today, David Bowie released a single which – even with the size and breadth of his discography over the course of his life and times as a recording artist – remains one of the signature moments of his career...and, no, we’re not talking about “The Laughing Gnome.” Produced by Gus Dudgeon and written, of course, by Bowie himself, “Space Oddity” was released five days before the launch of Apollo 11, making the tale of Major Tom a decidedly topical track at the time. The source of Bowie’s inspiration, however, was actually Stanley’s Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey, the last two

Tab Hunter: A Deep Dive and a Fond Farewell (Article)
Wednesday, July 11, 2018
When Rhino put together its calendar for the month of July, we’d made a point of saving a spot on July 11 to celebrate the birthday of Tab Hunter with a Deep Dive column, spotlighting the three albums we’ve got in our catalog by the former teen heartthrob. Little did we know at the time that this dive would also turn into a farewell to this legend of the silver screen, the small screen and, yes, the pop charts, too, but we’re afraid it’s true: Hunter died on Sunday at the age of 86. Born Arthur Andrew Kelm in New York City, the man who would be Tab was raised in California and joined the U.S

Deep Dive: a-ha, MEMORIAL BEACH (Article)
Friday, May 25, 2018
As we head into Memorial Day weekend, we thought we’d do a Deep Dive into an underrated album by a Norwegian band whose albums beyond their debut are already pretty darned underrated to begin with. If that doesn’t qualify as a Deep Dive candidate, we don’t know what is. In 1993, a-ha was not exactly riding high in the American pop culture consciousness: for as much success as the trio had found with their 1985 debut, HUNTING HIGH AND LOW, they didn't break the top-40 hit with their 1986 sophomore LP, SCOUNDREL DAYS. U.S. aside, they were still pretty darned massive in most countries around the

Now Available: Ornette Coleman, THE ATLANTIC YEARS (Article)
Friday, May 25, 2018
With today’s technology and the ease with which musicians can record in the privacy of your own home, it’s a lot easier to put out albums than it used to be. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, however, it was decidedly more challenging, and the fact that Ornette Coleman not only put out six studio albums between 1959 and 1961 but also managed to make them great… That’s almost mindboggling. This six-pack of LPs has just been reissued, along with 2+ hours of session outtakes, in a 10-LP set box entitled – what else? – ORNETTE COLEMAN: THE ATLANTIC YEARS. The albums featured in the set are: • The

Happy Anniversary: Crosby, Stills & Nash, Crosby, Stills & Nash (Article)
Tuesday, May 29, 2018
49 years ago today, one of the most famous trios of the rock era released their debut album, kicking off a career together that would carry on for the better part of the next five decades. The origins of the collaboration between David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash are well-documented, but given that we’re celebrating the anniversary of their first album together, it’s as good a time as any to rehash the tale. David Crosby had been in The Byrds, but he’d flown the coop, as it were, in late 1967. In early 1968, Stephen Stills’ band, Buffalo Springfield, had closed up shop, and later

Today in 1968: Al Stewart Takes a Nightride (Article)
Tuesday, May 29, 2018
50 years ago today, Al Stewart made an appearance on a well-respected radio program and, as a result of stopping by the studio, was inspired to set a poet’s work to music. When compiling a list of disc jockeys whose work can truly be said to have had a hand in changing music history, there aren’t but so many individuals whose names would make the cut, but John Peel most certainly would. Although he’s best known to Americans for having been the man behind the so-called PEEL SESSIONS, John Peel was and remains a legend in the UK for having transformed many an indie artist into a superstar. Happy Birthday: Marie Fredriksson of Roxette (Article)
Wednesday, May 30, 2018
Today we celebrate the birthday of the member of Roxette who isn’t Per Gessle, which immediately narrows the possibilities for the birthday girl’s identity down to a list of precisely one name: Marie Fredriksson. To honor both this lovely woman and her lovely voice, we’ve got the official Roxette playlist locked and loaded for your listening enjoyment, but we’ve also put together a list of five non-Roxette songs which also feature Ms. Fredriksson. 1. Strul, “Ki-I-Ai-Oo / Strul Igen” (1981): Marie’s gift for singing revealed itself relatively early in her life, and she began to grow
