Devo's sixth studio album, SHOUT, would be the group's last for Warner Bros. until 2010's SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY. Cut at L.A.'s Record Plant studios, the 1984 collection leans heavily on the then-new Fairlight CMI synthesizer, which spudboy Mark Mothersbaugh championed as an alternative to a guitar-driven approach. The result is a well-produced, danceable synth-pop set highlighted by such originals as “Here to Go,” “Puppet Boy” and the title track (plus a Devo-ized cover of Jimi Hendrix's “Are You Experienced?”). Mothersbaugh celebrates a birthday today, and we'll give him a SHOUT out with another spin of this underrated album.
