ELECTRA HEART

Marina Diamandis' second studio album, Electra Heart, was a breakout moment for the Welsh singer-songwriter. Released ten years ago today, it was her first album to reach #1 in the U.K., Ireland, and Scotland. It was a hit in America, where the record was certified gold, thanks to hit singles "Primadonna," "Bubblegum Bitch," "How To Be A Heartbreaker" and "Teen Idle."

Warner Music Group celebrates the album's 10th anniversary with an updated version pressed on colored vinyl. ELECTRA HEART: PLATINUM BLONDE EDITION will be released on September 23 as a double-LP set on magenta-colored vinyl for $39.98. The LPs come in a gatefold sleeve packaged inside a shiny iridescent slipcase. It's available for pre-order now. The new collection will also be available from digital and streaming services this Friday, April 29.

Originally released by Atlantic Records, ELECTRA HEART is a concept album about lost love and female identity. For the album, Marina created a fictitious character named Electra Heart to explore four female archetypes in American pop culture – housewife, beauty queen, homewrecker, and idle teen.

Musically, the electronic dance-pop style of ELECTRA HEART represented a departure from Marina’s debut album, 2010's The Family Jewels, which featured a new wave sound. The new direction resonated in Europe as well as the U.S., where the album produced two platinum-certified singles – "Primadonna" and "How To Be A Heartbreaker" – and two gold-certified singles – "Teen Idle" and "Bubblegum Bitch." The latter – which was never officially released as a single – became an unexpected hit in 2021 thanks to the song’s popularity on TikTok, with over 3M unique videos created.

ELECTRA HEART: PLATINUM BLONDE EDITION includes all 12 songs from the original release. They're joined by four additional tracks that came out after the original album. Those bonus songs include the international hit "How To Be A Heartbreaker," "Lonely Hearts Club" from the Deluxe Edition of the album; "E.V.O.L," a free download released on Valentine’s Day 2013; and "Electra Heart," a collaboration with American DJ Betatraxx that was featured in a music video on Marina’s YouTube channel.

"I think it's because it's tapping into this coquettish, innocent, but also devious side of femininity that all young women and non-binary people can relate to, or can at least observe and enjoy," singer Marina Diamandis told NYLON. "I think that's a timeless appeal. So it doesn't really matter how the tracks’ production sounds or any of those kinds of things, I think it will just always appeal to young people. That's something that I definitely didn't consider up until really this year, but I think that's why those two tracks [“Bubblegum Bitch” and “Primadonna”] have had such mass appeal on a platform like TikTok. They’re playful, and they’re fun, and that's what that app is about."
