Now Available: Born to be Blue

When word got out that Ethan Hawke would be starring in a new movie about Chet Baker, the reaction about the same as it is whenever anyone gets cast in a film about someone who actually existed: some people were excited, some people were annoyed. Based on the reaction to Born to be Blue when it was screened at South by Southwest, however, it seems like the end result has been better than anyone could’ve hoped: at the end of the film, the audience leapt to their feet and gave Hawke a standing ovation.

The critics seem equally enthralled:

To keep that love going, Rhino is doing its part to support the film by releasing its soundtrack. Born to be Blue: Music from the Motion Picture features 14 tracks, two of which find Hawke taking lead vocals: “My Funny Valentine” and “I’ve Never Been in Love Before.” The music for 12 of the 14 tracks is done by pianist David Braid, with Kevin Turcotte on trumpet, and the additional two tracks are original recordings by Charles Mingus ("Haitian Fight Song") and Odetta ("Go Down Sunshine").

If you feel like you need to wait until you’ve seen the film to buy the soundtrack, well, that’s your prerogative. Just so you know, though, it’s in stores now, and the track listing is such that we’re pretty sure you’ll be able to enjoy it whether you ever see Born to be Blue or not…although with reviews like those above, it seems pretty clear that you will want to see it.
