Rhino Factoids: Bobby Darin’s Last Concert (Article)
Wednesday, August 26, 2015
42 years ago today, Bobby Darin performed what would prove to be his final concert. It took place at the Las Vegas Hilton, the last date in a residency Darin had maintained at the hotel since the previous month, but his health was beginning to fail even more than it already had in the previous months. As TK Kellman, a member of Darin's band recalled of the Hilton stint on TVParty.com, “Bobby, who was unquestionably the consummate performer, would incorporate false exits and 'bows' in the show so he could duck briefly backstage and suck on an oxygen mask for a few seconds before returning to

Aquarium Drunkard Presents: Sounds: From Ghana To Memphis (Article)
Tuesday, August 25, 2015
Today we kick off with the original 1970s version of Ghanian highlife guitar legend Ebo Taylor's "Love And Death." As the polyrhythms fade out things quickly turn hoodoo with Nora Dean's "Angie La La (Ay Ay Ay)" - a thick slice of Jamaican psychedelia from 1969. Up next is Tom Waits take on Skip Spence's " Books of Moses." With its ambient indeterminate clanking amidst pouring rain and thunder, the Spence original is already otherworldly. Here, Waits further injects the track with a kind of backwoods Pentecostal deliverance sounding as if snake handling and Glossolalia are imminent. Bo Diddley

Digital Roundup: 8/24/15 (Article)
Monday, August 24, 2015
New this week in the Rhino Room at iTunes: Luna, The Best of Luna: After the dissolution of Galaxie 500, one of the greatest cult bands ever to emerge from Boston, Dean Wareham – who was directly responsible for the dissolution, having told bandmates Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang that he was bailing on the band – dived headlong into another musical endeavor pretty much right off the bat. That new endeavor was called Luna, and this compilation serves as a 17-track summation of the time the band spent within the Warner Brothers family, featuring songs from Lunapark (1992), Bewitched (1994)

Doing a 180: Digital Underground, Babes in Toyland, and Glassjaw (Article)
Friday, August 21, 2015
Digital Underground, Sex Packets: We usually try to keep up with our reports on our 180-gram vinyl reissues and let you know about them the week that they hit stores, but we have to admit that we're a week behind on this one, which - due to some bouncing around on the schedule - actually arrived on record store shelves last Friday. If you know anything about Digital Underground at all, then you know the first song on this album, as it's their biggest hit, but beyond “The Humpty Dance,” don't forget such other singles as “Doowutchyalike” and “Packet Man.” If you're looking for a party album to

Aquarium Drunkard Presents: Pavement / The Secret History (Article)
Tuesday, August 18, 2015
Unlike others from their decade (the 90s), Pavement, especially in the early years, left off as many a gem as they included on their proper LP output. And as recently stated by Malkmus and Kannberg, the “B-sides” from this era (almost) form a sort of alternate history of the band — you know, something akin to that Beren(stein) parallel. “The B-sides from Slanted And Enchanted could’ve been on that album easily—they were not made to be B-sides. The whole album was all just one big B-side in a way, so this stuff is equal to the album tracks. We really thought any of those songs could be on

Doing a 180: Orbital and Orton (Article)
Friday, August 14, 2015
Orbital, 1 / 2: As has so often been the case with techno-dance artists from the UK, Orbital never came anywhere near to matching their UK chart success in the US, to the point where you’d be hard pressed to find all that many Americans who even know who they are, but if you’ve got a soft spot for dance music that uses unique samples and delivers songs that are memorable enough to keep you interested even when the majority of their tracks top out well beyond the five-minute mark, you’ll want to investigate their first two albums – cleverly entitled 1 and 2 – and hear how great they sound when

Happy 30th: The Cure, The Head on the Door (Article)
Thursday, August 13, 2015
30 years ago today, The Cure released the album that provided the band with their first entry into the upper half of Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart as well as their inaugural entry onto the Billboard Hot 100. Some would say that The Head on the Door is the first properly commercial album in The Cure’s back catalog, but it’s certainly not 100% radio-friendly pop stuff. That said, there’s no question that songs like “In Between Days” and “Close to Me” certainly find Robert Smith and company delivering some of the most upbeat material of their career, which would explain why the former track

Happy 35th: Devo, “Whip It” (Article)
Thursday, August 13, 2015
35 years ago today, Ohio’s favorite sons – or at least some of them, anyway – released the single that would go on to become the biggest hit of their career. In an interview for Rhino.com earlier this year, Devo founding member Gerald Casale reflected on the origins of the song: “I was reading Gravity's Rainbow, and I wrote the lyrics in one night after who knows how many pages. Because that's a lot of pages. But it was because I was just so turned on by (Thomas) Pynchon's parodies of limericks and the Horatio Alger story and ‘you're number one,’ ‘there's nobody else like you,’ and ‘you can do
