Woodstock: Music from the Original Soundtrack and More (Album of the Day)
On this day in 1969, the original Woodstock festival began in Bethel, New York. The 3 days of peace & music that followed were a cultural milestone that produced an Oscar-winning documentary and accompanying album a year later. WOODSTOCK: MUSIC FROM THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK AND MORE topped the Billboard chart and eventually went double-Platinum, thanks to a talent line-up that's the stuff of legend. Iconic performances by Richie Havens (“Freedom”), Ten Years After (“I'm Going Home”), Sly and the Family Stone (“I Want to Take You Higher”) and Jimi Hendrix (“The Star-Spangled Banner”) may have only scratched the surface of what was played that weekend, but the triple-LP captures the spirit and variety of the festival perfectly. The historic WOODSTOCK: MUSIC FROM THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK deserves a place in any good collection of popular music.

The Reprise Albums (1968-1971) (Album of the Day)
THE REPRISE ALBUMS (1968-1971) brings together the recordings that helped establish Joni Mitchell as one of the most-talented artists of her generation. The Canadian-born singer-songwriter released four collections for the label: SONG TO A SEAGULL, CLOUDS, LADIES OF THE CANYON and BLUE - the last considered by many to be one of the greatest albums of all time. The 4-disc boxed set includes essential tracks like “River,” “Chelsea Morning,” “Both Sides, Now,” “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Woodstock” and “The Circle Game.” Featuring newly remastered sound and produced with the close involvement of Mitchell herself, THE REPRISE ALBUMS (1968-1971) shows the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer at her very best.
So Far (Album of the Day)
After just two studio albums, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young had enough material for a best-of; the consistent high quality of SO FAR is testament to the remarkable talents of the group. Released to capitalize on the foursome's first stadium tour, the Atlantic collection features 11 tracks - five pf them Top 40 hits (“Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” “Ohio,” “Woodstock,” “Teach Your Children” and “Our House”), though virtually all of these songs have become staples of classic rock radio. Filled with inventive arrangements and peerless harmony singing, SO FAR reached No.1 on the U.S. album chart on this day in 1974, and has gone on to sell more than 6 million copies.
Ladies Of The Canyon (Album of the Day)
Joni Mitchell's third album, LADIES OF THE CANYON, shows her rapid musical growth; the self-produced set's sophisticated arrangements add piano, clarinet, saxophone and multi-tracked vocals to the singer-songwriter's sonic palette. The dozen originals include some of Mitchell's most popular compositions, among them “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Woodstock” and “The Circle Game” - songs that may be better known from covers (by Janet Jackson, CSNY and Tom Rush, respectively), but Joni's versions are just as memorable. Released on this day in 1970, LADIES OF THE CANYON was neither Mitchell's biggest seller or most famous album – but it may be the hidden gem in one of rock's most rewarding catalogs.
Crosby, Stills & Nash (Album of the Day)
Featuring an ex-Byrd, a former Buffalo Springfield member and a Hollies refugee respectively, CSN were a supergroup for the Woodstock generation, filtering a sometimes-guarded optimism through glorious three-part harmonies on their epochal self-titled debut for Atlantic Records. The trio's songwriting skills were as impressive as their singing, and the material here is uniformly strong; the ten originals include Top 40 hits “Marrakesh Express” and “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” as well as such could've-been-singles as “Guinnevere,” “Wooden Ships” and “Helplessly Hoping.” The musical high-water mark of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, CROSBY, STILLS & NASH remains a beguiling listening experience, and the perfect way to wish Graham Nash a happy birthday.
