Stone Temple Pilots (Album of the Day)
San Diego quartet Stone Temple Pilots were among the most successful alternative rock groups of the 1990s, emerging in the post-grunge era to sell more than 30 million albums worldwide. Now STP is back with a highly anticipated self-titled album - the first with new lead singer Jeff Gutt. Produced by the band's Dean and Robert DeLeo, the set features a dozen originals including lead single "Meadow," which proved a Top 10 hit at rock radio. "Never Enough" channels the gritty guitars and swaggering rhythms perfected on CORE (1992), PURPLE (1994) and NO. 4 (1999), while "Roll Me Under" glides along a nimble bass line before slamming into a chorus powered by Gutt's baritone. While true to the group's past, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS is also a thrilling look forward.
Purple (Album of the Day)
On a roll after their debut, Stone Temple Pilots scaled even greater heights with follow-up PURPLE, released on this day in 1994. Though the San Diego band emerged just as grunge was on the rise, their sound proves broader here, combining the intense heaviness with a little psychedelia and a lot of accessibility. Allmusic called STP “the best straight-ahead rock singles outfit of their time,” and it's hard to argue with that when “Interstate Love Song,” “Big Empty” and “Vasoline” are among these 12 gracious melodies. PURPLE debuted at number one on the Billboard chart and quickly went multi-Platinum, and its music easily justifies that commercial success.

Core (Album of the Day)
Stone Temple Pilots won MTV's Best New Artist award on this day in 1993 thanks to their raucous debut CORE. A breakout success, the album peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts, dominated radio waves with hits like “Sex Type Thing” and “Wicked Garden,” and has been certified 8x Platinum by the RIAA. The band also took home the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance for their smash single “Plush” - though this collection is much more than the sum of its parts. “We wanted to create a vibe which would run right through the whole album,” noted bassist Robert DeLeo of the Brendan O'Brien-produced set, and CORE remains a touchstone of 1990s alternative rock.

Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop (25th Anniversary Edition) (Album of the Day)
Stone Temple Pilots embraced experimentation and open-mindedness to make their third album, 1996’s TINY MUSIC ... SONGS FROM THE VATICAN GIFT SHOP. It was recorded with longtime producer Brendan O’Brien at a home studio in California’s Santa Ynez Valley and the 25,000-square-foot house became a muse for STP, who recorded in different rooms – from the attic to the garden – to explore new sounds. The Atlantic collection is a pitch-perfect amalgamation of the band members’ musical personalities, yielding three #1 hits - “Big Bang Baby,” “Lady Picture Show” and “Trippin’ On A Hole In A Paper Heart.” Just in time for the album’s 25th anniversary, the new 3-CD/1-LP TINY MUSIC … SONGS FROM THE VATICAN GIFT SHOP: SUPER DELUXE EDITION includes a disc of early versions, instrumental and alternate mixes of album tracks plus a previously unreleased 1997 concert from Panama City Beach, Florida.
The Most Wonderful Time of the Year (Album of the Day)
Aren't the best presents under the Christmas tree always a surprise? No one would've guessed that Scott Weiland, Grammy-winning lead singer of alt-rock hitmakers Stone Temple Pilots, had a holiday album in him. THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR shows the performer's a soft spot for pop vocalists of decades past with versions of “White Christmas” and “The Christmas Song” that would have made Crosby and Cole nod in admiration. But the 10 tracks here also include a few less-traditional takes on seasonal standards; “O Holy Night” gets some reggae flavor and “Silent Night” a bossa nova beat. A labor of love for the Christmas music he grew up on, Scott Weiland's THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR is pretty wonderful, indeed.
Amazing Grace: The Complete Recordings (Album of the Day)
It was the first day of June 1972 when Aretha Franklin released the instantly classic AMAZING GRACE live album, recorded in January of that year at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, California. With such luminaries in the audience including Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones (as seen in the incredible documentary film of the event that was released in 2018), Franklin and the Southern California Community Choir positively blaze through such Black American church standards as “Mary, Don’t You Weep” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” Franklin’s impassioned performance brings the Holy Spirit to the packed congregation, creating a document that none less than Marvin Gaye once called "Aretha's singular masterpiece ... her greatest work." Today, we praise the eternal spirit of Aretha Franklin, and the indelible classic that is AMAZING GRACE.
