MISSY ELLIOTT BLVD

Missy Elliott has arrived--literally. The legendary hip-hop trailblazer has been honored with her very own street--Missy Elliott Boulevard--in her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia. A strip of McLean Street has renamed to reflect the rapper famous for such hits as "Get Ur Freak On" and "Lose Control." Elliott waved and posed for photos with fans during the event, which included the Norfolk State University Band performing a medley of the rapper's songs.

"I love y'all, thank you for supporting me always," Elliott said during the renaming ceremonies yesterday (via WTKR). "I would tell the little Missy to keep going just like she did. It's obstacles, it's ups and downs, but you know faith and belief in God got me here today. I have accomplished many things, and won many awards, but this trumps all when you get the love from your hometown."

Elliott was also celebrated by none less than the governor of Virginia, who was there to make a special proclamation: "I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize October 17th, 2022 as Missy Elliott day in the Commonwealth of Virginia." Not to be outdone, the mayor of Portsmouth, Shannon Glover, presented the rapper with her very own key to the city.

Among the local hip-hop luminaries in attendance for the event were Elliott's longtime collaborator, producer Timbaland, as well as rapper Pusha T, best known as one-half of Virginia rap act the Clipse.

"As artists, we all look to be received by our hometown. That's like the biggest thing," Pusha T said. "We cherish the idea of our hometown receiving us, and you know look at how they laid it out for us. Shout out to the city of Portsmouth."
