Once Upon a Time in the Top Spot: The Everly Brothers, “Cathy’s Clown” (Article)
Thursday, May 7, 2015
55 years this week, the sad story of how a girl named Cathy broke a poor boy’s heart and forced him to bid her farewell found its way to the top of the UK Singles chart. Written by Don and Phil Everly, the music of “Cathy’s Clown” took its inspiration from a classical source: Ferde Grofe’s “Grand Canyon Suite.” Don Everly clarified the song’s origins in a 1982 interview with the Radio Times, explaining, “There’s a little marching section which was used for a Philip Morris commercial on the radio at the time and I was very taken by it. Aquarium Drunkard Presents: New Orleans - Twenty (Article)
Monday, May 4, 2015
Spring has sprung. Everyone has there own persona; signifier, but mine has long been the annual ritual that is one of our country's longest running music festivals: The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Or, Jazzfest. Spanning two weekends, while the fest indeed boasts national touring acts the focus (and beauty) is the celebration of "the indigenous music and culture of New Orleans and Louisiana." And then there are the night shows. This week's playlist highlights the latter -- New Orleans indigenous music. Laissez les bons temps rouler. ABOUT AQUARIUM DRUNKARD Based in Los Angeles, Justin

Rhino Factoids: A Tragic Event Inspires an Iconic CSN&Y Track (Article)
Monday, May 4, 2015
Today marks the 45th anniversary of the event which inspired Neil Young to write one of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s most iconic songs: the Kent State University shooting. Nixon revealed that American combat forces had commenced the so-called “Cambodian incursion.” It would be fair to say that many an educated college student did not take this news well, and their dissatisfaction with these actions was expressed through rallies and protests throughout the United States. Unfortunately, many of these protests were not nearly

New this week in the Rhino Room at iTunes: • Quincy Jones, Dollars: Music from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack – Just for the record, we do know that this Warren Beatty and Goldie Hawn film is generally known simply by a dollar sign ($), but we decided to write out the whole word lest those who aren’t familiar with the flick become befuddled. And don’t worry, you don’t need to have seen the heist pic in question to enjoy a soundtrack that features performances from Little Richard, Robert Flack, and Doug Kershaw. • Lalo Schifrin, The Fox: Original Soundtrack Album – You really can’t go

Now Available: Four Mike Oldfield Vinyl Reissues (Article)
Tuesday, April 28, 2015
If you’re a Mike Oldfield fan who prefers LP releases to CD or digital versions and your favorite Mr. Oldfield’s back catalog is the very specific era of 1992 through 1998, boy, is this your lucky week: it just so happens that we’ve issued 180-gram vinyl editions of the four albums he released during that particular window. That’s such a nutty coincidence that we’d hit your precise sweet spot like that, right? It’s, like, what are the odds it’d play out that way? It’s such a crazy old world we live in… Now that we’ve played this situation up to make it seem far more statistically unlikely than
