Tuesday, July 23, 2019
Hey, all you groovy guys and gals! Are you ready for a flashback? You are...? Great! Then let’s take a trip in the Wayback Machine to that glorious time known as...last week. Yes, we know: you remember how we started off last week’s piece about the latest reissues in Rhino’s Summer of ’69 campaign, and you’re, like, “Man, that was kind of lame then. Deep Dive: Van Morrison, HIS BAND AND THE STREET CHOIR (Article)
Monday, August 31, 2020
Today we celebrate the birthday of legendary Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison, and to commemorate the occasion, we thought we’d take a look at one of his albums that often gets overlooked because of its proximity to two of the most famous albums of his career. Those two albums? ASTRAL WEEKS and MOONDANCE. This album, however, is HIS BAND AND THE STREET CHOIR, which came into existence predominantly during the first half of 1970 at A&R Recording Studios in New York City, with recording wrapping up in July and August. Produced by Morrison himself, the album actually started out in Woodstock

Bob Lefsetz: Welcome To My World - "Crosby, Stills & Nash Primer" (Article)
Friday, April 4, 2014
SUITE: JUDY BLUE EYES It wasn't an immediate hit. "Marrakesh Express" got all the airplay. And being in excess of seven minutes long, radio was reluctant to play the track in its entirety, the days of free format radio were dying. So the initial Crosby, Stills & Nash album developed slowly, most of us heard it at friends' houses, at parties, and marveled at the elixir that emitted from the speakers. There was harmony before. But not in the rock of the day. And we remembered acoustic guitars from the folk/hootenanny years. But their return here was so fresh we all broke out our instruments and

Lovin' Spoonful (Article)
Tuesday, January 21, 2014
The good-time sounds of the Lovin' Spoonful made the quartet a fixture during the golden age of Top Forty radio. Over a period of two years in the mid-Sixties, the New York-based group charted a string of ten Top Forty hits, seven of which placed inside the Top Ten at a time when the competition included Motown, the Beatles and countless British Invasion bands. The Lovin' Spoonful's tuneful, poppy singles have stood the test of time and at least one of them, "Do You Believe in Magic," remains a defining rock and roll anthem. The four original members--singer/guitarist John Sebastian, guitarist

Once Upon a Time in the Top Spot: John Sebastian, “Welcome Back” (Article)
Friday, May 8, 2015
39 years ago today, the former frontman for The Lovin’ Spoonful earned not only his first and only #1 single but, indeed, his first and only top-40 hit, period, and it never would’ve happened if it hadn’t been for American falling in love with a bunch of hooligans known as the Sweathogs. Sebastian’s solo career kicked off in 1968, when he departed the ranks of The Lovin’ Spoonful and began moving in a folkier direction with his music. Although he wasn’t exactly setting the charts on fire, he nonetheless built a strong fanbase with his solo work, and it’s fair to say that his profile jumped

Historic Tours: Miami Pop Festival (Article)
Wednesday, December 28, 2016
48 years ago today, the second Miami Pop Festival of 1968 kicked off…and, oddly enough, it had no connection to the first Miami Pop Festival of 1968, aside from the fact that they both took place at the same venue: Gulfstream Park, a horse racing track in Hallandale, Florida, just around the corner from Miami. The first festival, which took place in May, was produced by Michael Lang, who would go onto far greater fame as the co-creator of Woodstock. Although the bill for the festival was impressive, with The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry, Blue Cheer, The Mothers of
