Rhino Factoids: The Monkees Take to the Stage (Article)
Thursday, December 3, 2015
49 years ago today, the Monkees took the stage of the Honolulu International Centre Arena and performed their very first full-length concert, thrilling the assembled fans and surprising more than a few folks who'd written them off as being no more than a studio group. The Monkees had already done a promotional tour earlier in 1966 which found the foursome doing a few small performances, but the kickoff of their first proper tour was something that the folks behind the scenes were more than a little antsy about. As David Pearl wrote in his 16 Magazine piece about the start of the tour, “It had

Rhino Factoids: Jimi Hendrix Bids The Monkees Adieu (Article)
Thursday, July 17, 2014
47 years ago today, one of the most unlikely bills in rock history came to a formal conclusion, but given the way the opening act was treated by the audiences who’d come to see the headliner, it was clearly a mercy killing. Picture it: 1967, New York, where Micky Dolenz is attending a Monkees press junket. After being informed that he absolutely must see a performance at a nearby club, where a guitarist plays with his teeth, Dolenz pops by the club and gets exactly what he’s been promised. Fast-forward to the Monterey Pop Festival, where – as Dolenz recalled in a 2013 interview with Guitar

NEW FROM RHINO HANDMADE: THE MONKEES PRESENT MICKY, DAVID, MICHAEL (Article)
Thursday, May 9, 2013
By October 1969, things were radically different for The Monkees. Their NBC show had left prime time, Peter Tork had left the group, and Top 40 hits were no longer a sure thing. It was in this atmosphere that Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones and Michael Nesmith exerted more creative control to record THE MONKEES PRESENT. The resulting album is one of the group's most varied, from the iconic single, "Listen To The Band," to Micky's anti-war anthem, "Mommy And Daddy," Davy's lush "French Song," and Michael's Nashville-tinged barn-burner, "Good Clean Fun." Strictly limited to 5,000 individually numbered

Single Stories: The Monkees, “Randy Scouse Git” (Article)
Tuesday, February 7, 2017
50 years ago today (or possibly yesterday, given the time zone difference between the US and the UK), a Monkee met a Beatle and – during the course of the trip – experienced an evening which led to the germination of a controversial Monkees song. If you’re slightly startled at the news that there actually was a controversial Monkees song, then you must not be from the UK, as that’s where the song was deemed to be controversial. Rather than head straight down the path to that story, however, we’re going to take a slightly winding road to get there. On February 6, 1967, Micky Dolenz flew to

Once Upon a Time in the Top Spot: The Monkees, Headquarters (Article)
Wednesday, June 24, 2015
48 years ago today, Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork found themselves atop the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart for the third time in less than a year, but this time it mattered more than the other two occasions combined. Why? Because this time The Monkees played their own instruments, by gum. When a band comes into existence with the aid of a television studio, it should come as no real surprise when said band tends to be at the mercy of that studio, but you can imagine the frustration such a situation would cause with the band members, particularly when those members

Rhino Factoids: The Monkees Meet Johnny Carson (Article)
Tuesday, June 17, 2014
For a band best known as a quartet in their heyday, the Monkees have nonetheless spent a fair amount of time as a trio over the course of their career, including their current incarnation, but the lineup of Micky Dolenz, Mike Nesmith, and Peter Tork is one borne at least partially out of tragedy, due to the death of Davy Jones in February 2012 permanently ending any chance of the full foursome reuniting again. The first time the band soldiered on as a trio, however, came about as a result of Tork’s departure, leaving Dolenz, Jones, and Nesmith to carry on without him. While the trio’s two Tork

Now Available: The Monkees, Good Times! (Article)
Friday, May 27, 2016
You may not know this, since it’s hardly gotten any press at all, but we released a new Monkees album today. We know we’re most likely completely blindsiding you with this information, as it’s only been discussed in Rolling Stone, The New York Times, and basically every print and online publication that covers pop culture in even the slightest capacity, so our apologies if we’ve startled you. If you feel like you need to sit down for a moment, we’d understand. Produced by Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne fame, GOOD TIMES! came about as a way of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the

New Monkees Tour Dates! May & June 2014 (Article)
Wednesday, March 19, 2014
A great deal of fun was had by the Monkees and their fans during the course of the group’s 2014 official convention this past weekend, including Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork all being on hand to receive their plaques certifying the Monkees’ induction into the American Pop Music Hall of Fame. Arguably the most tantalizing tidbit to emerge from the event, however, was the announcement that the trio would be kicking off a new tour in May, one which would be taking them along the east coast and through the Midwest. We know you’ve been chomping at the bit to find out if the Monkees
