Booker T & the MG's GREEN ONIONS 60th Anniversay Edition Sprouts in Feb. 2023 (Article)
Wednesday, November 16, 2022
Sixty years ago, Booker T. & The MG’s transformed an impromptu studio jam into one of the most popular instrumentals ever recorded, “Green Onions.” An instant hit when it came out in the summer of 1962, the single topped the R&B chart and peaked at #3 on the pop chart before selling a million copies. That fall, the song became the title track to the band’s debut album, which, coincidentally, was also the first album released on Stax Records, the legendary Memphis-based record company that shaped the sound of Southern Soul in the Sixties. In celebration of this classic album’s anniversary

Richard Pryor Goes Digital (Article)
Monday, November 30, 2015

Single Stories: Carla Thomas, “Gee Whiz (Look at His Eyes)” (Article)
Monday, January 30, 2017
56 years ago today, Carla Thomas’s classic R&B single “Gee Whiz (Look at His Eyes)” first entered the Billboard Hot 100, which seems like a perfectly good excuse to pull together a Single Stories piece about it. Written by Thomas herself when she was all of 16 years old, “Gee Whiz” began its trek to success with the help of Carla’s famous father, Rufus Thomas, who played Carla’s demo of the song for his boss at Satellite Records, Jim Stewart. (Satellite would soon change its name to Stax.) Smitten with the song even in its rough form, Stewart decided that he wanted Carla to re-record the track

Wilson Pickett (Article)
Tuesday, January 21, 2014
Wilson Pickett brought the gruff, throaty power of his gospel-trained voice to bear on some of the most incendiary soul music of the Sixties. Some of his best work, including "In the Midnight Hour" and "634-5789," was cut in the mid-Sixties at Stax studios in Memphis and released on Atlantic Records. Pickett also connected with the crew of house musicians at Muscle Shoals, where, beginning in 1966, he cut such memorable soul smashes as "Land of 1,000 Dances," "Mustang Sally" and "Funky Broadway." Pickett enjoyed a steady run of hits on Atlantic, leaving behind a legacy of some of the deepest

Happy 50th: Otis Redding, LIVE IN EUROPE (Article)
Wednesday, July 19, 2017
50 years ago this month, Otis Redding released his only live album to land in record stores during his lifetime. Recorded at Paris’s Olympia Theater during the Stax/Volt tour of Europe, LIVE IN EUROPE finds Redding being backed by a band that knew his material as well as any band of the era possibly could: Booker T. & the MG’s. As such, it’s a tight performance from start to finish, one with a set list that offered a perfect mixture of covers – among them the Beatles’ “Day Tripper,” the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” and the Temptations’ “My Girl” – and Redding’s own classic
