Stax Classics (Album of the Day)
Founded in 1957, the Memphis-based Stax Records earned its nickname, Soulsville U.S.A., with a long string of timeless hits and legendary artists. Booker T. & The M.G.’s was the house band and the bedrock of Stax; along with providing the musical backdrop for virtually everyone else on the label, the four-piece scored a series of hits with their unique soulful instrumentals. STAX CLASSICS: BOOKER T. & THE M.G.’S spotlights irresistible grooves like “Hip Hug-Her” and “Time Is Tight” as well as the group’s unforgettable #1 R&B smash, “Green Onions.” Part of a year-long celebration of the iconic soul imprint, this new 12-track STAX CLASSICS collection offers further proof that the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers were among the hottest bands in history.

Along with the more refined sounds of Motown, Memphis-based Stax Records was among the great fountainheads of R&B in the 1960s. The soul duo of Sam Moore and Dave Prater recorded a cavalcade of memorable hits for the label beginning in 1965, and STAX CLASSICS: SAM & DAVE touches on many of their greatest recordings. The 12 tracks include “Hold On! I’m A Comin’” and “You Don’t Know Like I Know,” as well as the dynamic duo’s signature anthem, “Soul Man,” which reached #1 on the R&B chart and #2 on the pop chart in 1967. Produced in celebration of the legendary label's 60th anniversary, the new STAX CLASSICS: SAM & DAVE delivers a knockout punch from the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers.

There's good reason that Carla Thomas is often called the Queen of Memphis Soul; she's the daughter of R&B royalty (hitmaker Rufus Thomas) and was instrumental in establishing one of the city's most iconic record labels, Stax. The soul imprint turns 60 years old this year, and as Rhino celebrates the anniversary with a series of STAX CLASSICS releases, it's only fitting that one is devoted to Carla. The new 12-track collection highlights Thomas' soul-pop gems like “B-A-B-Y” and “I Like What Your Doing (To Me)” along with stellar collaborations “Cause I Love You,” recorded with her father, and “Tramp,” her scorching 1966 duet with Otis Redding. With insightful new liner notes, the wallet-friendly STAX CLASSICS: CARLA THOMAS is an engaging look at the legendary label's first star.

One of the true giants of 1960s soul music, Otis Redding worked his way up as a performer and driver with several Southern R&B bands before getting his big break in 1962 singing at a Stax recording session. The iconic imprint celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, and Rhino marks the occasion with curated collections from several legendary artists including Redding, whose body of work helped transform Stax from a small Memphis-based record label into a musical institution. STAX CLASSICS: OTIS REDDING distills his incredible discography down to a dozen bona fide soul classics like “Try A Little Tenderness,” “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)” and “Respect,” which was later immortalized by Aretha Franklin. Naturally, the collection also includes “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay,” a posthumous release that topped both the R&B and pop charts.

Booker T. & the M.G.'s defined Southern soul as the Stax Records house band (playing on classics by such artists as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave and Wilson Pickett, among others) and as hitmakers in their own right. IN THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT, the instrumental quartet's fourth studio set, is an enjoyable romp through a dozen seasonal standards including Billboard-charting single “Jingle Bells,” “Winter Wonderland” and R&B favorite “Merry Christmas Baby.” Keyboardist Booker T. Jones, guitarist Steve Cropper, bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn and drummer Al Jackson, Jr. are in peak form throughout the 1966 Stax/Atlantic collection – holiday music never got funkier than on IN THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT.
