It’s time to take a look at some of Rhino’s latest vinyl reissues and... What’s this? We’ve only got one to talk about this time around? Well, that’s all right: at least it’s a good one! Stone Temple Pilots, PURPLE: Yes, it’s STP’s second studio album, and it contains remastered audio, which means that singles like “Big Empty,” “Vasoline,” and “Interstate Love Song” are gonna sound better than ever. So it’s got that going for it already, but in addition, it’s gonna be pretty darned eye-catching, too, since also being pressed on blue/white swirl vinyl. Well, what are you waiting for? This thing

Instant Gratification: Stone Temple Pilots, “Never Enough” (Article)
Thursday, March 8, 2018
We’ve been talking it up for several weeks now, but you can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel: in one week and one day, the new Stone Temple Pilots album – their first with new lead singer Jeff Gutt – will finally be hitting stores. As you may have already heard, the album will be a self-titled affair, and the band is doing everything in their power to get the word out about their new music by offering up several opportunities to hear songs from the new LP in advance. • First came “Meadow,” which dropped on November 15, the same day the news broke about Gutt being the band’s new

Monday, February 3, 2020
2020 isn’t going to be just another year for Stone Temple Pilots: this Friday, the band will be releasing the first acoustic album of their career. PERDIDA is a continuation of the musical evolution that began with the arrival of their new lead singer, Jeff Gutt, in 2017, taking the band into heretofore-unexplored territory with deeply personal songs, introspective lyrics, and instruments you wouldn’t normally expect to hear on an STP album. You can check out the title track from the album via the Spotify link, and if you’ve missed out on the two previous tracks that the band has released to

Happy 25th: Stone Temple Pilots, PURPLE (Article)
Friday, June 7, 2019
25 years ago today, Stone Temple Pilots released their sophomore album, an LP which defied the odds by failing to qualify as a slump and, indeed, going on to sell more than six million copies. Produced by Brendan O’Brien, PURPLE definitely showed that the band’s debut album, CORE, was in no way a one-off success, starting with the fact that it premiered at the very top of the Billboard 200. More importantly, however, PURPLE took great pains to show that Stone Temple Pilots’ sound, which unquestionably fell into the realm of grunge, was evolving considerably, so if anyone thought that the band

Single Stories: Stone Temple Pilots, “Wicked Garden” (MTV Unplugged) (Article)
Thursday, September 7, 2017
25 years ago this week, Stone Temple Pilots released their song “Wicked Garden” to radio, and although it was never actually released commercially as a single, it has nonetheless gone on to become one of the most well-known songs. With lyrics by Scott Weiland and music by Robert and Dean DeLeo, “Wicked Garden” dates back to 1990, appearing on the band’s original MIGHTY JOE YOUNG demo. The version which appeared on their debut full-length album, CORE, was produced by Brendan O’Brien and was – per the late Mr. Weiland – “a song about people allowing all their innocence and purity to be lost from

Single Stories: Stone Temple Pilots, “Plush” (Article)
Wednesday, September 20, 2017
25 years ago this month, Stone Temple Pilots released their debut album, CORE, so today we thought we’d take a look back at the second single from that LP. Recorded in Canoga Park, California at Rumbo Recorders, “Plush” – which ranks among STP’s biggest hits – was a co-write between Robert DeLeo (music) and Scott Weiland and Eric Kretz (lyrics). DeLeo was reportedly inspired by his love of ragtime music when he composed the chord structure for the track, while Weiland’s lyrics reportedly came at least partially from an article he’d read about a girl who’d been found dead outside of San Diego
