Memorable Mingus Moments: Recalling a Jazz Legend (Article)
Tuesday, January 5, 2016
37 years ago, the world lost jazz legend Charles Mingus, who succumbed to the effects of ALS on this day in 1979. There's no point in trying to sum up Mingus's musical contributions in the span of a short article - they're far too substantial and deserve a lengthier look than what we're in a position to offer up at this very moment - but we can, however, spotlight a few particularly unique moments in his career that you may or may not know about. 1. Mingus and his band recorded three hours of music for the soundtrack of John Cassavetes' 1958 film Shadows. Alas, virtually all of his

Mono Mondays: Charles Mingus, Blues & Roots (Article)
Monday, June 23, 2014
If you’ve been following our weekly Digital Roundup feature, then you’re already fully aware that, as of a few months back, we’ve gotten into the occasional habit of starting off the week by dropping a new Mono release into our digital catalog, but in the past, we’ve just casually slipped the announcement of these releases into the opening lines Digital Roundup. Now that we’ve got a few of ‘em under our belt, however, we’ve decided that we’re going to institute a regular Mono Monday feature, and – as you might’ve suspected from the title of this piece – we’re kicking it off today with Blues &

Doing a 180: Have Yourself a Jazzy Friday (Article)
Friday, August 5, 2016
Rhino has made it a point to reissue classic albums on 180-gram vinyl on a regular basis. These are the latest to get that treatment. You're welcome. Charlie Mingus, Blues & Roots (Mono) – You already know Mingus’s work as a jazz man, but you may not be as aware of his appreciation of the blues. Recorded at the behest of Atlantic legend Nesuhi Ertegün, who suggested the album because critics were complaining that Mingus supposedly “didn’t swing enough,” the end result may indeed swing, but it does a whole lot more than that. Miles Davis, Amandla – This was the final collaboration between Davis

Wednesday, April 20, 2016
Mingus & Coltrane mixing it up…it doesn’t get much better than this! ABOUT DR. RHINO A young Dr. Rhino first encountered the magic of song whilst being born in the front seat of a Lincoln Continental. As the attending physician recalls, the tune was “Touch Me In The Morning” by Diana Ross. It was a mind-blower. Over the years, Dr. Rhino listened to many, many more songs. And, after several summers of diggin’ music, making the scene & a stint in Attica, the good doctor joined Rhino Records. A remarkable career of taste & empathy ensued. Dr. Rhino now spends his time hitting bull’s-eyes, making

Digital Roundup: 3/26/14 (Article)

Now available on iTunes... Belfegore, Belfegore: For the longest time, virtually the only Americans who were familiar with the German band Belfegore either grew up in the ‘80s or grew up in Europe, and that’s fair enough: they released a sum total of two albums during their brief existence, and only one of them – their 1984 self-titled effort – ever saw release in the States. Belfegore got a highly belated boost to their profile in 2011, however, thanks to David Fincher using their lone U.S. single, “All That I Wanted,” as the soundtrack to a scene in his film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
