Seasonal Streaming: Tik Tok Christmas (Article)
Monday, December 21, 2020
Welcome to "Seasonal Streaming," where - with an awareness of the holidays on the horizon (holy crap, they're practically here!) - we take a look at a tune from the Rhino digital catalog that, if it isn't already on your radar, certainly should be. Did we say a tune? Make that 49 tunes this time. Yes, that's a heck of a lot of tunes, but keep in mind that this is our last Seasonal Streaming for the season, so we figured we'd better make sure we got as much of this stuff onto your radar as possible, and how better to do that than via an Apple playlist? It's called Tik Tok Christmas, and if you

You Oughta Know: Don Kirshner (Article)
Thursday, January 17, 2019
They called him “The Man with the Golden Ear,” and with good reason: Don Kirshner was a songwriter, a producer, a music publisher, and a manager, and by the time he passed away on this date in 2011 at the age of 75, he was unquestionably as much of a music icon as the musicians he worked with. In other words, you oughta know more about him. Over the years, the media’s desire to boil everything down to the simplest possible bullet points has led to Kirshner’s legacy regularly being summed up with three key projects: The Monkees (he was responsible for corralling the songwriters to provide

You Oughta Know: Carole King (Article)
Thursday, December 13, 2018
It’s been awhile since we’ve broken out this feature, but for those of you who don’t recall “You Oughta Know,” the purpose is to remind people of songwriters whose names are relatively well known, even if the sheer volume of classic songs they’ve composed may not be. Our purpose, of course, is to remind you of just how talented they are, and this time around we’re shining the spotlight on Carole King. What songs has King had a hand in penning? Well, as it happens, we’ve put together a playlist filled with them, but here’s a sampling of some of the classics she’s had a hand in composing… “Will

On Black Friday, Get Thee to a Record Store (Article)
Wednesday, November 23, 2016
One of the most enjoyable holiday traditions to emerge over the course of the past few years has been the Record Store Day Black Friday event, in which labels take one of the most excruciating shopping days of the year and make it worthwhile for vinyl aficionados to brave the crowds and hit their local record retailer. This year, Rhino will be delivering eight limited-edition releases unto record stores, and there’s some pretty cool stuff in the mix, if we do say so ourselves: Blue Man Group – Three Limited edition of 1,200 copies on splattered vinyl, $29.98 Foreigner – The Flame Still Burns

Black Friday Coming Down: Record Store Day Preview (Article)
Wednesday, November 27, 2019
As you probably know (but which we’re going to tell you anyway, because that’s our job), this Friday, a.k.a. the day after Thanksgiving, is Black Friday. This, of course, also means that it’s Record Store Day, one of the most wonderful times of the year for music fans. Why? Because it’s a day that record labels – including yours truly, Rhino Records – release limited-edition vinyl offerings to brick and mortar record stores here, there, and...well, not quite everywhere, but a whole lot of places, certainly. You can confirm if a store in your neck of the woods is participating in Record Store

Rhino’s Got You Covered: George Benson, Death Cab for Cutie, Michael Martin Murphey, and The Head and the Heart (Article)
Wednesday, July 22, 2020
It’s Wednesday, so it must be time to take another dip into the Rhino catalog and trot out a new quartet of cover songs that you may or may not have heard before. Let’s get started, shall we? • George Benson, “Here, There and Everywhere” (1989): Whether Benson opted to tackle classic songs for his TENDERLY album because he wasn’t finding any new material that he liked or just because they were familiar tunes, we don’t know. But we do know that this Beatles cover is just on the right side of schmaltzy, hitting all the romantic notes necessarily to make it delightful. • Death Cab for Cutie,

Earl Palmer (Article)
Tuesday, January 21, 2014
Earl Palmer grew up in New Orleans and later moved to Los Angeles, impacting the music scenes in both cities as a first-call session drummer. From 1950 to 1957, Palmer's powerful backbeat and mastery of second-line shuffle rhythms made him a much in-demand percussionist in his hometown. He was hired by bandleader Dave Bartholomew in 1947 after a stint in the army and recorded extensively with Bartholomew protege Fats Domino, Lloyd Price, Smiley Lewis and other New Orleans artists at Cosimo Matassa's famed J&M studio. He also played on the seminal rock and roll recordings of Little Richard, who

RIP, Gerry Goffin (Article)
Friday, June 20, 2014
Yesterday, the music world lost one of its great songwriters, not just of the Brill Building era (although he certainly qualifies in that particular category) but of all time. Gerry Goffin was 75, but over the course of three-quarters of a century, he collaborated with numerous writers – among them Barry Goldberg, Barry Mann, Michael Masser, Russ Titelman, and, of course, Carole King, to whom he was married from 1959 to 1968 – and composed more hit singles than most people even realize. Born on February 11, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York, Goffin began his songwriting career in earnest after
