Single Stories: Madonna, “Justify My Love” (Article)
Monday, October 30, 2017
27 years ago today, Madonna released the single which served as one of the obligatory new tracks on her first greatest-hits collection. Written by Lenny Kravitz, Ingrid Chavez, and Madonna, “Justify My Love” was originally recorded by Chavez – she wrote the lyrics, and Kravitz and producer Andre Betts wrote the music – but when Madonna’s version was initially released, Chavez’s credit was MIA. This was remedied in an out-of-court settlement, thankfully. As for Madonna’s credit, it was reportedly earned as a result of changing a single line – that’s what Chavez said, anyway – but it’s fair to

You Oughta Know… Ian Hunter (Article)
Monday, June 3, 2019
It’s Ian Hunter’s birthday today, and it’s a little startling to realize that he’s turning the big 8-0, if only because he’s still out there bashing out the hits with Mott The Hoople on a regular basis…and, no, we’re not joking. This is from a show the band did in April, and it’s quite evident that he’s alive, well, and still kicking ass: But if you find yourself nodding in reaction to our remarks while within your head there’s a refrain of “I have no idea who you’re talking about,” well, you oughta know who Ian Hunter is! First and foremost – and as you might’ve figured out, since we said as

Now Playing: Have a Great Day on Spotify (Article)
Friday, March 27, 2020
Okay, a show of hands: who’s stuck at home? And please note that if everybody isn’t raising their hand right now, everyone here at Rhino is going to be very upset...and if National Geographic has taught us nothing else (and they haven’t), it’s that it’s never good to upset a Rhino. Seriously, though, we know that you’re stuck in the same situation we all are, and when one finds themselves in the midst of self-isolation, they need to do something to keep their spirits up, to maintain their energy levels, and all those sorts of things...and, yes, we also know that one of the best ways to do that

Rhino’s Got You Covered: Deftones, Nada Surf, Micky Dolenz, and Davy Jones (Article)
Wednesday, September 18, 2019
It’s Wednesday, so it must be time to take another dip into the Rhino catalog and trot out a new quartet of cover songs that you may or may not have heard before. Let’s get started, shall we? • Deftones, “Drive” (2011): We’d be remiss if we didn’t work at least one Cars cover into the mix this week, given that we’re all still mourning the death of Ric Ocasek around these parts (and likely will be for some time), so we thought we’d go with one by a band who never fails to impress when it comes to their way with delivering respectful covers in a manner that makes the song their own. Nice one

And the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2018 Nominees are… (Article)
Thursday, October 5, 2017
Since 1986, every year has brought a new crop of inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and every year there’s a lot of finger-crossing prior to the announcement of the year’s nominees, which is promptly followed by a healthy blend of excitement about who’s made the list and annoyance over who hasn’t. Here at Rhino HQ, we’ve already taken time to deliver our now-traditional glower in the general direction of Cleveland for the continued absence of The Monkees from the nominees list – we’ve found that it’s best to get the glowering out of the way early – and now we’ve slipped into a

Summer of ’69: This Week’s Releases (Article)
Tuesday, July 23, 2019
Hey, all you groovy guys and gals! Are you ready for a flashback? You are...? Great! Then let’s take a trip in the Wayback Machine to that glorious time known as...last week. Yes, we know: you remember how we started off last week’s piece about the latest reissues in Rhino’s Summer of ’69 campaign, and you’re, like, “Man, that was kind of lame then. Are you really going to recycle it and do it again?” You’re right. No point in going through all that trouble when we can just remind you about the specifics of the Summer of ’69 promotion and then just offer up this week’s list of release. So here

Rhino’s Got You Covered: The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Dan Hicks, Kylie Minogue, and The Farm (Article)
Wednesday, January 29, 2020
It’s Wednesday, so it must be time to take another dip into the Rhino catalog and trot out a new quartet of cover songs that you may or may not have heard before. Let’s get started, shall we? • The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, “Mary, Mary” (1966): This is one of those semi-covers that we’re including on a technicality, since Butterfield and his Blues Band were recording a song that was written by someone else – Michael Nesmith – but their version actually came out before the version by The Monkees. Still, close enough, right? (Just go along with it. It’s too late to turn back now, anyway.) •

Happy 25th: EMF, “Unbelievable” (Article)
Tuesday, November 3, 2015
25 years ago today, EMF released the single that would, for better or worse, define them for the duration of their career. It was not, however, their only hit, so don't believe the one-hit wonder hype, because it's simply not true. Composed by the band as a whole—which, in case you don't have your scorecard handy, means that the songwriting credit goes to James Atkin, Derry Brownson, Mark Decloedt, Ian Dench, and Zac Foley- “Unbelievable” is one of those songs that was so good that it was always going to be impossible for EMF to match its success…and when we say that, we're talking both

5 Songs You May Not Have Realized Ry Cooder Played On (Article)
Monday, December 18, 2017
Given that he’s sitting comfortably in the top 10 of Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, you won’t be surprised to learn that Ry Cooder’s skills as an axe-man have been utilized by many bands and singers over the years, but here are five songs that you may not have realized Ry was playing on. 1. Paul Revere and the Raiders, “Get It On” (1966): Cooder was only just getting started in the music business when he contributed bottleneck guitar to “Get It On,” or at least we’re pretty sure he did. There aren’t actually any credits listed on the album, but Cooder has spoken of the
