This Day in ’87: Paisley Park Opens (Article)
Tuesday, September 11, 2018
30 years ago today, Paisley Park Studios opened in Minneapolis, Minnesota, giving Prince a place to lay down whatever tracks he wanted, whether he had any intention of actually releasing them or not. Prince wasn’t the only one who recorded there, of course: plenty of other songs and albums were constructed within the studio’s hallowed halls, ranging from huge hits to cult favorites. We’ve compiled a list of five such songs, and you may be surprised by some of the names and some of the songs with ties to Paisley Park. 1. R.E.M., “Shiny Happy People” – When R.E.M. initially arrived at Paisley

Happy Birthday: Ray Manzarek (Article)
Wednesday, February 12, 2020
Today we celebrate the birthday of the late, great keyboardist for The Doors, the legendary Ray Manzarek, but it isn’t just us folks here at Rhino HQ who are commemorating the occasion: there’s actually going to be a theatrical screening of a documentary dedicated to our man Ray, and – better yet – it could well be playing in a theater near you! Entitled The Doors: Break On Thru – A Celebration of Ray Manzarek, the film is part-concert, part-documentary, offering up both a 2016 performance by surviving Doors members John Densmore and Robby Krieger – one which was filmed on Manzarek’s birthday

Rhino’s Got You Covered: Tiny Tim, Sisters of Mercy, Sturgill Simpson, and Jerry Lee Lewis (Article)
Wednesday, August 7, 2019
It’s Wednesday, so it must be time to take another dip into the Rhino catalog and trot out a new quartet of cover songs that you may or may not have heard before. Let’s get started, shall we? • Tiny Tim, “People Are Strange” (2006): It’s doubtful that anyone from Tim on down would argue with the suggestion that he’d qualify for as one of the titular people, but like just about every song that Tim tackled in his lifetime, he made this one his own. Although you’ve by now noted that it was released in 2006, it was actually recorded during Tim’s stint with Reprise Records (it started in the late

Rhino’s Got You Covered: Julian Lennon, Nanci Griffith, Matchbox Twenty, and Halestorm (Article)
Wednesday, October 9, 2019
It’s Wednesday, so it must be time to take another dip into the Rhino catalog and trot out a new quartet of cover songs that you may or may not have heard before. Let’s get started, shall we? • Julian Lennon, “Ruby Tuesday” (1989): Yes, the idea of the son of a Beatle doing a Rolling Stones cover may leave you momentarily taken aback, but once you accept the concept, you can easily accept Julian’s version of the song, which can be found on the soundtrack to the classic coming-of-age sitcom The Wonder Years. • Nanci Griffith, “I Live on a Battlefield” (1997): Taken from Griffith’s BLUE ROSES

Now Streaming: The Doors, “Touch Me” (Doors Only Mix) (Article)
Thursday, September 19, 2019
“Strings? We don’t need no stinking strings!” That’s our impression of Robby Krieger if he was reacting to the suggestion that The Doors should add orchestral strings to “Touch Me” and if he was also one of the stars of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. As you might imagine, we don’t really get a lot of opportunities to break out that particular impression, but we saw our chance when we read Rolling Stone’s new interview with Krieger. “I said [to producer Paul A. Rothchild], ‘Oh, God. Now we’re copying the Beatles,’ and the Stones had just done their version of the orchestra thing,” recalled

Deep Dive: Kyuss, WELCOME TO SKY VALLEY (Article)
Thursday, May 17, 2018
Today’s Rhino birthday boy is probably best known these days for his work with either Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal, or – to a slightly lesser extent – Them Crooked Vultures, but there was once a time when Josh Homme was best known as the guitarist and occasional backing vocalist for the band Kyuss. As such, we thought today would be a good day to take a deep dive and look back at that band’s major-label debut. Recorded at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, WELCOME TO SKY VALLEY was co-produced by the band and Chris Goss, who at the time was known far more for being
