Happy Anniversary: The Replacements, HOOTENANNY (Article)
Monday, April 30, 2018
35 years ago this week, The Replacements released their sophomore album, which was a slightly less ramshackle LP than their debut and one which is still a whole lot of fun. Recorded predominantly in “a warehouse in some godawful suburb north of [Minneapolis],” according to the liner notes of the album (it was actually the Stark/Mudge Mobile Unit warehouse in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota), HOOTENANNY is actually a more mature work than their debut album, SORRY MA, FORGOT TO TAKE OUT THE TRASH, although you might be hard pressed to realize it without listening to the two albums back to back. Out Now: The Replacements, FOR SALE: LIVE AT MAXWELL’S (Article)
Friday, October 6, 2017
Way back yonder in February 1986, The Replacements arrived in Hoboken, New Jersey, took the stage of Maxwell’s, and raged against…something. Not necessarily the dying of the light – that seems a little overly poetic for the ‘Mats – but you know how it was with those guys when they were in their heyday: if you’d asked them what they were raging against, they probably would’ve just pulled a Brando and sneered, “Whaddaya got?” That’s why The Replacements were legends. It’s also why people have been champing at the bit for the release of FOR SALE: LIVE AT MAXWELL’S. When the ‘Mats took the stage

Monday, September 18, 2017
In February 1986 at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, New Jersey, The Replacements famously – some would say infamously – turned in a performance for the ages. Over the course of 29 songs, the band mixed up album tracks, singles, B-sides, and covers from all stages of their career up to that point, and a 24-track mobile studio was there to record the proceedings. Up to this point, the only version of that show to emerge has been a low-quality bootleg, but that’s about to change: on October 6, FOR SALE: LIVE AT MAXWELL’S 1986 will finally hit record store shelves officially. Now that we’ve hyped it so

Back in 1987, Minneapolis rock and roll renegades The Replacements famously stole their Twin/Tone master tapes and threw them in the Mississippi River. A year later—while wrapping up work on their Warner Bros. album, Don't Tell A Soul—the group absconded with a collection of their reels from Paisley Park studios. Thankfully

The One after the Big One: Replacements, ALL SHOOK DOWN (Article)
Thursday, August 16, 2018
Ah, the Replacements. It’s difficult to think of a band that ended sounding so much more different than they sounded when they began. From their snotty, shambolic 1981 debut, SORRY MA, FORGOT TO TAKE OUT THE TRASH, the band cut a path through punk clubs, rock clubs, theater stages and television studios, slashing and burning as they went, sometimes kind of sober, but most times not. By the time they ground to a halt with ALL SHOOK DOWN, they seemed spent, physically and emotionally, though not creatively. Not by a long shot. Legend has it that ALL SHOOK DOWN was supposed to be frontman Paul

When The Replacements released their 1988 album DON’T TELL A SOUL, the end result proved to be the most commercially successful album of the band’s career, but that doesn’t mean that they were happy with how it sounded. Indeed, it’s well-documented that the LP was just a little too smoothly-polished for the band’s liking – Paul Westerberg famously said, “I thought the little things I’d cut in my basement were closer to what I wanted” – but what you may not realize is that the album’s producer, Matt Wallace, wasn’t particularly thrilled with it, either, having not been the one in charge of
